A small backyard with southern exposure becomes a cozy oasis. This deck is over 400 sqft and has three levels which includes railings, hot tub spa, pergola and shade protection.

When this house was constructed the back yard, and those around the neighborhood, was completely empty. It was a literal blank slate waiting to come to life.
As you can see however, the backyard was quite small at about 25′ deep and only 35′ wide. So what do you do to get the most out of this kind of a property?
The owner decided to forego an in-ground pool and opt for a hot tub spa with a luxurious multi-level deck that tastefully wrapped around it.
Ledger connecting to the house presented a big challenge because it meant removing the ledge stone masonry, properly installing multiple layers of flashing, removing dry wall from the basement ceiling, and blocking behind the I-beam band board on the sill plate.
This would have added a couple thousand dollars extra in labor and requires a very skilled builder to do it properly and ensure the ledger is strong and sealed properly.
The owner and builder opted for a free standing deck with out any ledger connection. The product used for the footing system was the Deck Foot Anchor that easily installs with a lightweight handheld 1/2″ impact wrench.
The Deck Foot Anchor proved to be the perfect solution. With three separate decks and decking running perpendicular to each adjacent deck, a total twenty-four footings were required set at approximately six feet apart.
The clay soil made driving the 36″ augers into the soil and easy job and took less than three hours once the footing locations were carefully laid out. Construction started right way.
The load plate distributes most of the deck’s weight to the grade below which was a mix of stone dust and 1/2″ granular stone. Landscape fabric below the stone ensured that no weeds would be able to grow.
Framing was a quick job even with some of the framing details required to create the butt jointed picture frames around the infield joists. The boards on each deck run perpendicular to its adjacent deck creating subtle but beautiful visual contrast.
With an attractive design, the real fun began when the railing and pergola features were added.
The 4×4 and 6×6 posts for the railing and pergola were surface mounted with the Titan Post Anchor which meant no cutting and notching of deck boards. The posts were elevated above the deck to stay dry and were further protected with metal snap fit post skirts and caps.
The 2×4 rails were secured to the posts with hidden fastener Shadow Rail connectors leaving no hint of screws. And the sideways installed Snap’n Lock Balusters were the final touch for an elegant deck that was built to last for decades.
A shade sail secured to the pergola and free standing 6×6 posts ruggedly surface mounted with Evolution Structural Post Anchors provided style and relief from the hot southern exposure.
